The full scope of gender-based violence is still pretty unknown to the general public, and the way its portrayed in the media has a lot to do with it.

We do see examples of GBV like intimate partner violence and sexual assault, but the sensationalism or victim-blaming attached to these stories often diminishes the reality of the experience. On top of that, other types of violence that falls under GBV aren't usually deemed “media-worthy”, only leading to further lack of knowledge and understanding.

This month we’re going to explore survivors in the media – the way being a survivor is portrayed, the hidden stories, and the public figures whose lives have been impacted by it.

Did you know there are multiple meanings behind the image we created to represent our Transformative Justice work?

Traditionally, the figure of Lady Justice is used to personify the moral force in judicial systems. While we kept the scales - meant to represent balancing arguments & facts fairly - we made some changes to better reflect the modern survivor seeing justice.

She's usually blindfolded to represent impartiality → We've removed her blindfold to represent survivors being able to see their path to justice clearly.

She usually carries a sword to represent justice being swift & final → We've replaced the sword with a megaphone to represent the fact that her voice will be heard, and by all.

We included a sun to represent the new day of justice we're hoping to usher in, and grass to represent the growth that can be achieved when everyone lends their hands to plant seeds of change.

A monthly meeting where we create a space to open up & talk about the challenges faced with the current justice system, share feedback, updates, and opinions related to the concept and execution of transformative justice.

A true mix of cross-Canadian defence lawyers, crown prosecutors of sexual assault cases, judges, frontline service workers, shelter workers, academics doing research on this topic – and more!

This is 'The Attrition Pyramid' developed by the incredible Dr. Holly Johnson who is a Professor of Criminology at @uottawa.

Using information from Statistics Canada, she visualized what actually happens when someone is sexually assaulted and enters into the criminal justice system. The numbers speak for themselves - ironic considering so many survivors are unable to have their say in the way justice is enacted for them.

This is why alternative models, like transformative justice, are so crucial in supporting survivors with accessing their version of justice in a way that is healing and supportive.
